If you searched how to clean a crystal diffuser and landed on a vinegar tank, an ultrasonic plate, or a mist rinse — that is someone else’s machine. It used to be the advice on this page, too. It was wrong for ours.
A BBPD crystal oil diffuser has no reservoir, no cool mist, and no plate to descale. Natural stones (over 500g) sit in a glass cup on a Mt. Fuji–inspired base that softly heats and lights from below. A few drops of fragrance oil go on the crystals. The stones drink it; the warmth helps the scent lift. Cleaning is closer to dusting a favourite lamp than servicing an appliance.

Why this is not an ultrasonic clean
Ultrasonic diffusers hold water, vibrate a metal plate, and throw a cool mist. Their care is empty-the-tank, wipe-the-plate, vinegar-cycle, rinse, distilled water. None of that belongs here.
Ours has no tank, no mist, and no ultrasonic plate. You are not filling to a line. There is nothing to vinegar-cycle. The Amethyst Crystal Diffuser and Rose Quartz Crystal Diffuser product pages describe the same piece: a few drops of oil on the stones, a softly heated and lit base.
If you have already poured water into the heated USB base — the electronics under the glass, not the cup — stop, unplug, and dry it from the outside. Do not run it wet. Email enquiry@bbpd.com.au if the glow or warmth does not come back.
The weekly wipe
Unplug first. Once a week if you use it most days, or whenever the crystals look dusty or tacky:
- Unplug and let the base go cool.
- Shift the stones just enough to see the glass cup. You do not need to empty the whole bowl every time.
- Wipe the stones with a soft, dry cloth or cotton pad.
- Wipe the glass cup if oil has crept down the sides, then dry it.
- Wipe the outside with a barely damp cloth, then dry. Keep moisture off the USB opening and the heated base.
- Settle the stones back so light can still come up through them.
No monthly “deep clean.” No plate under the crystals.
Oil film on the stones
Fragrance oil is meant to sit in the crystal. A little sheen after a few evenings is use, not dirt. Wipe when the stones feel tacky, look cloudy, or pick up lint.
Do not chase a factory-new matte. These are natural stones, each a different shape and hue. Soaking, scrubbing, or a kitchen degreaser will do more to the surface than leftover oil ever will. If a drop has run into the glass cup, wipe the cup. Do not chase it into the base.
Changing scent
The stones hold what you last put on them. Mixing last night’s vanilla into this morning’s citrus is how a room starts to smell like a drawer.
Let the current scent fade as far as you reasonably can. Unplug, wipe the stones and the glass cup, and let everything dry. Then add a few drops of the new oil on the crystals — not into the base. You will not get a laboratory-blank slate; you will get a fair start. Do not soak the crystals “to reset them.”
Optional water in the glass cup (stronger throw — not a tank)
Default is oil on the stones, dry cup, USB glow. That is enough for a bedroom or a desk.
If you want a stronger scent, you can add a small amount of water to the bottom of the glass cup — under the stones, not poured over them, and never into the heated base. A little, sitting in the cup. You are not filling a reservoir, making mist, or running an ultrasonic cycle.
When you have used that optional water: unplug, empty the glass cup (tip so water does not run into the USB / heated base), dry the cup and any splashed stones, and do not leave standing water in the glass. Only then plug back in, or put the piece away.
That splash is the one place water belongs — only if you chose it.
What never to do
- Never put water into the USB / heated base. The glass cup is not the base.
- Never vinegar-cycle a plate. There is no ultrasonic plate. Do not run water and white vinegar “for ten minutes.”
- Never soak the stones. Wipe them.
- Never put the piece in the dishwasher, the sink, or under a tap.
- Never pour oil into the base. A few drops on the crystals only.
- Never use abrasive cleaners, bleach, or “essential-oil deep clean” recipes. Soft cloth. Patience.
- Never run the base if the cup is wet underneath, or if water has tracked toward the USB opening.
If an old blog — including our previous version of this page — told you to empty a reservoir, wipe an ultrasonic plate, use distilled water as a habit, or mist-clean, that was the wrong product family. You can stop.
A note on pale stones
Pale stones — rose quartz, citrine, clear quartz — can pick up a faint film or tint from darker oils, vanillas, resins, and some citrus blends. That is use, not a fault. Wipe sooner if the look of the stone matters. Do not soak to “whiten” them. Worried? Send a photo to enquiry@bbpd.com.au.

Do I add water to a crystal oil diffuser?
